The Quays Shopping Centre, Newry has announced two new international retail brands as its newest tenants.

Global footwear brand, Skechers and Scandinavian home ware and interiors retailer Søstrene Grene will open in the Quays as part of an expansive line up of exciting new tenants expected to open at the retail development.

Skechers’ store in Newry will be its third in Northern Ireland, having already opened in Belfast and Craigavon. Søstrene Grene will open its second shop in Northern Ireland following the success of its first store in Belfast city centre, which opened in September 2016 on Ann St.

The expansion comes on the back of substantial new investment by the landlord in a uniquely early response to the changing market conditions.

The two store openings are expected to create 30 new job opportunities for the surrounding area. Both Skechers and Søstrene Grene are new entrants to the retail market in Newry.

Skechers signed a retail licensing agreement with footwear retailer Shuz 4 U Ltd. in 2010 to open and operate Skechers branded retail stores throughout the North and Republic of Ireland.

Sunil Shah, executive director, Shuz 4 U Ltd. said: “With great style, variety and pricing, Skechers truly is an ideal brand for Northern Ireland. We are delighted to create fourteen new jobs in Newry, bringing our total number of staff to 250 across Ireland North to South.”

Richard Power, franchisee, Søstrene Grene commented: “The opening of Søstrene Grene in Newry is an important part of the organisation’s expansion across Europe.  This is our second store in Northern Ireland, following our debut store opening in Belfast city centre last September. The Northern Irish retail market has remained strong and is continuing to grow. We feel that there is a gap in the market for this unique brand that has already seen great success on a global scale.

“Søstrene Grene has proven itself as a very popular and universal brand. The Belfast store has outperformed our expectations which is why we are excited about this second store opening in The Quays, Newry.”

Colin Mathewson, senior director, CBRE said: “As the retail sector in Northern Ireland continues to perform well with the continued benefit of the Sterling/Euro exchange rate, the opening of Skechers and Søstrene Grene are fantastic additions for The Quays.”

Commenting on the announcement, Dr Gerard O’Hare, managing director, Parker Green said: “We are delighted to welcome both Skechers and Søstrene Grene to the Quays Shopping Complex, which is already home to some of the UK and Ireland’s most prestigious retail brands including Debenhams, Sainsbury’s, Top Shop, Next, River Island and Superdry.

“We are investing further at The Quays with a £20m expansion plan adding 9,300 sq m fifth phase to the centre, taking the total space to nearly 50,000 sq m. This allows us to create large format stores for Next and Marks and Spencer, ensuring the best possible retail experience for our customers.

“This latest investment will create in the region of 300 jobs when the retail units are operational, and will provide our loyal customers with the highest quality of choice. This reinforces Newry’s position as a premier retail destination in Northern Ireland.”
