Rainbow Communications secures key NI Civil Service telecoms contract

Rainbow Communications has inked a major multi-year deal with the Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) to upgrade and maintain crucial telephony communications networks across 185 locations.

 

Northern Ireland’s largest independent telecom provider was awarded the contract, which will modernise a key component of central government’s telephony infrastructure, following a comprehensive competitive tender process.

 

The Northern Ireland Civil Service and associated government bodies handle and make millions of calls every year and this work will be extended across the full network.

 

The contract award win means that Rainbow can now power ahead transforming out-dated government telephony infrastructure and transferring approximately 55,000 direct dial-in points to fully-equipped centralised data centres which will unify, underpin and strengthen its communications network for a generation.

“Service delivery is the government’s number one priority and this contract award will help us to ensure we can maintain that provision by introducing a quality, single infrastructure solution which not only provides stability and resilience for years to come but which reduces costs and improves flexibility and reliability.”

 

In 2025, all public switched telephone network (PSTN) and integrated services digital network (ISDN) lines will be switched off, migrating landline users to a single IP core network. In reality, they will cease to become available in just over two years’ time.

 

This will mean all voice traffic, in addition to data transfer, video and conference calling, will be transmitted via an Internet connection.

 

The contact awarded by NICS to Rainbow Communications reflects the government’s aim to improve its telephony and communications infrastructure in advance of the change.
